Starting today, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) R8g instances are available in AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand, New Zealand), AWS Africa (Cape Town), AWS Europe (Milan), and AWS Canada West (Calgary) regions. These instances are powered by AWS Graviton4 processors and deliver up to 30% better performance compared to AWS Graviton3-based instances. Amazon EC2 R8g instances are ideal for memory-intensive workloads such as databases, in-memory caches, and real-time big data analytics. These instances are built on the AWS Nitro System , which offloads CPU virtualization, storage, and networkin

Why this matters
Why now

AWS continues to expand its global infrastructure and offers more performant compute options closer to end-users, driven by increasing regional demand for cloud services.

Why it’s important

The availability of advanced Graviton-based instances in new regions enhances cloud infrastructure capabilities for memory-intensive workloads globally, potentially reducing latency and improving data sovereignty for regional customers.

What changes

Customers in these new regions now have local access to AWS Graviton4-powered R8g instances for high-performance, memory-optimized applications, offering a more efficient and potentially cost-effective alternative to older instance types.

Winners
  • · AWS
  • · Regional cloud application developers
  • · Companies with data residency requirements
  • · Memory-intensive workload operators
Losers
  • · Less efficient regional data centers
  • · Competitors with older CPU architectures
Second-order effects
Direct

Increased adoption of AWS R8g instances for critical database and analytics workloads in the newly supported regions.

Second

Reduced operational costs and improved performance for organizations leveraging these new instances, potentially freeing up budget for further innovation.

Third

Enhanced digital infrastructure resilience and economic growth in the new regions due to more robust local cloud compute availability.
