AWS Batch now supports customer-ordered instance allocation strategies

Source: AWS What's New

Share

AWS Batch now offers the Best Fit Progressive Ordered (BFPO) and Spot Capacity Optimized Prioritized (SCOP) allocation strategies, giving you more control over instance type prioritization in your compute environments. BFPO and SCOP enable you to manually define instance type ordering based on your workload-specific performance characteristics. To use these features in AWS Batch, specify BEST_FIT_PROGRESSIVE_ORDERED allocation strategy for your on-demand compute environments or SPOT_CAPACITY_OPTIMIZED_PRIORITIZED for your Amazon EC2 Spot compute environments and provide an ordered list of inst

Why this matters
Why now

As cloud costs become a primary concern for customers, AWS is offering more granular control over resource allocation to optimize spending and performance.

Why it’s important

This update provides users with greater control over compute resource allocation, enabling more cost-effective and performance-tuned batch processing on AWS.

What changes

Customers can now manually prioritize specific instance types for their batch workloads, moving beyond automated 'best fit' strategies to align with their specific needs.

Winners
  • · AWS customers with complex or cost-sensitive batch workloads
  • · Cloud cost optimization platforms
  • · Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Losers
  • · Users without specific instance preferences
Second-order effects
Direct

AWS Batch users can achieve better cost efficiency and workload performance through tailored instance allocation.

Second

Increased adoption of AWS Batch for diverse compute-intensive tasks, potentially reducing reliance on self-managed clusters.

Third

Other cloud providers may introduce similar finely-tuned instance allocation strategies to remain competitive in batch processing services.
