Today, AWS announces the preview of business context and semantic search for AWS Glue Data Catalog, helping you discover and understand data by semantic meaning. You can now enrich your Glue Data Catalog tables, including those backed by S3 Tables, with glossary terms and custom metadata fields. You can also add skills to the catalog that direct agents to additional context about your data. With business context indexed alongside technical metadata, you can use the new Glue Search API to find data by semantic meaning, and ground your AI agents in trusted definitions rather than inferred contex

Why this matters
Why now

The rapid adoption of AI agents and the increasing complexity of data environments necessitate better data discoverability and understanding to ground AI in reliable information.

Why it’s important

This development allows AI agents to more effectively discover and utilize trusted data, improving their performance and reducing the risk of generating inaccurate outputs based on inferential context.

What changes

Data discovery shifts from purely technical metadata to semantic meaning, enhancing the ability of both humans and AI to find and understand relevant data assets within complex organizations.

Winners
  • · AWS
  • · Enterprises with large data estates
  • · Data scientists and AI developers
  • · AI agent providers
Losers
  • · Companies with poor data governance
  • · Generic data cataloging tools without semantic AI
  • · Manual data discovery processes
Second-order effects
Direct

Enterprises can more efficiently leverage their existing data for AI applications, speeding up development and deployment of agentic systems.

Second

Improved data discoverability and trust lead to a higher quality of AI outputs and reduced 'hallucinations', accelerating the adoption of AI agents in critical business functions.

Third

This capability could foster a new breed of data-aware, context-rich AI agents that fundamentally reshape data management practices and create competitive advantages for early adopters.
