Linux DT Patches Provide Very Basic Support For Apple M3 Pro / Max / Ultra
Upstreamed for the Linux 7.2 kernel was initial support for booting Linux on the Apple M3 SoC devices. But just the barebones suppport for booting with not yet any accelerated graphics or other typical function needed for daily use of M3 Apple devices on Linux, just booting to a console. Now this work is complemented by additional Device Tree patches for also booting M3 Pro / Max / Ultra devices on Linux...
The open-source community continues its ongoing efforts to port Linux to Apple Silicon, with this development building on previous foundational support for the M3 SoC.
This incremental progress expands the compatibility of a leading open-source operating system with a high-performance, widely adopted hardware platform, potentially increasing the utility and flexibility of Apple devices for a broader user base.
The ability to boot Linux on more variants of Apple's M3 chips suggests a future where Apple Silicon devices are less exclusively tied to macOS, though full functionality remains a considerable hurdle.
