Show HN: OpenKnowledge – open source AI-first alternative to Obsidian/Notion
Hi HN, Nick here. We’re launching OpenKnowledge ( https://openknowledge.ai/ ), a “what you see is what you get” markdown editor that has direct integrations with Claude, Codex, and other agents. Available as MacOS app or Web UI+CLI. Fully free/local and OSS. We built this because we wanted a Notion-like experience for writing and sharing markdown files across our team. Obsidian is the best alternative we tried, but found it doesn’t have a true WYSWIG UI and it didn’t integrate well with Claude/Codex outside of community plugins. So we built OpenKnowledge. It takes shape as: 1. A MacOS app with
The rapid advancement and integration of large language models like Claude and Codex are pushing developers to create tools that seamlessly embed AI capabilities into daily workflows, addressing user demand for more intelligent applications.
A strategic reader should care because this project signifies the ongoing trend of AI being directly integrated into productivity software, moving beyond simple plugins to become a core component of user experience.
Productivity tools are shifting from static editors to dynamic, AI-first platforms that proactively assist users in content creation and knowledge management, reducing the need for manual AI pipeline integration.
- · AI model providers (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI)
- · Open-source AI tooling community
- · MacOS users seeking local AI-integrated tools
- · Teams requiring enhanced collaborative markdown editing
- · Traditional markdown editors lacking direct AI integration
- · Proprietary knowledge management systems slow to adopt AI
- · Users unwilling to embrace AI in their workflows
This launch immediately provides an open-source, AI-integrated alternative to established knowledge management tools like Notion and Obsidian.
Increased adoption of such tools could accelerate the demand for local AI processing capabilities and further 'AI-ify' other software categories.
The proliferation of AI-first knowledge bases might lead to the development of interoperable AI agents that can cross-reference and synthesize information across different personal and team knowledge repositories.
