Stumbling Into AI Emotional Dependence: How Routine AI Interactions Reshape Human Connection

arXiv:2606.04150v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Public discourse and emerging policy typically assume that AI emotional support is a deliberate act: a lonely user consciously seeking comfort from a dedicated companion chatbot. Why this matters
Why now

The proliferation of general-purpose AI systems and increasing human-AI interaction are leading to unintended emotional dependencies that are only now being studied empirically.

Why it’s important

This research reveals a critical, often overlooked, aspect of human-AI integration, shifting the understanding of AI's emotional impact from deliberate interaction to incidental, structural influence.

What changes

The perception of AI's role in human emotional well-being expands beyond explicitly designed companion bots to include all forms of AI interactions, fundamentally altering how we approach AI ethics and design.

Winners
  • · AI ethicists
  • · Psychological research institutions
  • · UX designers focusing on emotional impact
  • · Platforms providing ethical AI guidelines
Losers
  • · Platforms ignoring incidental emotional AI impacts
  • · Users unaware of subtle AI influences
  • · Policymakers focused solely on explicit AI emotional support
Second-order effects
Direct

Emotional dependence on AI will become a recognized and widespread psychological phenomenon.

Second

New regulatory frameworks will emerge to address incidental AI emotional manipulation and dependence.

Third

The definition of human connection and interpersonal relationships will subtly shift as AI plays an increasingly intimate role.
